This series is offered in memory of Bill Morganti, one of the series designers, and a longtime teacher. The goal of the series is to introduce dancers into the world of social and competitive dance in a friendly social environment. Participants meet once a week for about 90 minutes where they are taught dance routines in two or three different styles. The last session was waltz, tango, and foxtrot. Some amount of familiarity with social dancing is recommended, but not necessary. No previous competitive ballroom experience is needed. No partner required.
Participants can practice their routines at any of the social events throughout the region. The group often organizes itself to go, en mass, and dance with each other, then bring back stories of great success – imagined or otherwise – back to the class.
At the end of the session we hold a competition among ourselves at one of the local competitions. Over the years we have dance at the Eastern, Yankee, Commonwealth Classic, NEDSC, Dancing a la cart, and the New England Open. The competition is a judged event, and that can seem daunting. However ours is a friendly competition among ourselves. One of our judges commented “the participants seem to be competing with each other rather than against each other.”
Stay tuned for out next series.
